Beloved ‘Grease’ Star Nearly Unrecognizable Almost 50 Years After the Film’s Release
Michael Tucci, 80, who played Sonny LaTierri in the 1978 classic ‘Grease,’ was spotted running errands in Los Angeles.
Nearly 50 years after playing a member of the T-Birds gang in the iconic 1978 movie Grease, actor Michael Tucci was spotted out and about running errands in Los Angeles.
Tucci, 80, portrayed Sonny LaTierri in Grease. He later had a role in It’s Garry Shandling’s Show from 1986 to 1990.
Other notable roles Tucci had that fans might recognize him from include The Paper Chase, Diagnosis Murder, and Flying Blind.
The Daily Mail shared photos of Tucci with his silver Lexus in Los Angeles. The actor looked unrecognizable, with grey hair, glasses, and facial scruff. He was dressed casually, wearing a blue vest, white shirt, dark pants, and grey sneakers.
Before landing the role of Sonny in the movie, Tucci had a role in the Broadway version. He shared during a 2022 interview at the Liverpool Comic Con that he was replaced in the stage show “because I was getting too many laughs.” His character wasn’t supposed to be a jokester; he was supposed to be unlikeable.
Despite being replaced in the stage version, Tucci was tapped to take on Sonny in the movie version of Grease, and fans loved it.
The actor revealed how he ended up in the movie version of Grease. He shared that as he performed in a play in Los Angeles, Grease producer Alan Carr and casting director Joel Thurm happened to be seated in front of Tucci’s parents.
Tucci’s mother heard the men mention Grease and asked them about it. She said they should see her son, because he’d been in the stage production. That comment led to Tucci auditioning for Carr the following day, and he landed the role.
“Then he gave me a hundred dollars to take my mother and father to Chasen’s for dinner. He was a good man. He changed my life within five minutes,” Tucci shared.
During the Comic Con interview, Tucci gushed over fellow Grease stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. He noted that at the time, Travolta was already a star. However, he added, Newton-John was a “mega star.”
He never expected Grease to become the icon it has. However, at the time, he saw the “electric” chemistry between Travolta and Newton-John and knew there was something quite special there. Nearly 50 years after its release, fans still love the iconic film and enjoy the fun performances that Tucci and his co-stars delivered.
