General Hospital’s Sonny Corinthos had become something of a homebody over the last year. He pretty much stayed away from the action, often holding court in his living room while his minions got business done. Now, Sonny has come off the sidelines to get mixed up in a Port Charles mobster mess not of his own making. According to actor Maurice Benard, there’s more of that to come.
“I just wanna say GH is on fire so many things going on and SONNY IS BACK and it feels so good,” Benard recently tweeted, stirring fan reaction.
As one fan put it, “Yeah, having Sidwell more powerful than Sonny didn’t sit well with me.”
Indeed, it didn’t feel right for many, as Sonny has been the head criminal (with a heart of gold) honcho in Port Charles for more than three decades. Enemies come in, but Sonny eventually brings them down and is sitting on top again. Sidwell managed to get Sonny to cower and give in when he produced blackmail photos of Laura (Genie Francis) and Sonny with Henry Dalton’s (Daniel Goddard) dead body. Sidwell was the one who killed Dalton and Sonny is determined to prove it.
His first step was to set a trap for the butler and Sonny did the dirty work himself, removing the starter wires from Pascal’s car as Pascal tried to make his great escape. That was Sonny taking charge, something fans have been clamoring for, with one saying, “About time Sonny realized he’s a mob boss and not a grandpa sitting at home making lasagna and playing with puppies.”
With Sonny’s right-hand man and longtime enforcer, Jason Morgan, due back on the scene next month when Steve Burton returns, it’s a pretty good bet that Sonny won’t be getting a rest any time soon.
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and streams each weeknight on Hulu.
