‘The Middle’ Is Getting a Spin-Off Show About Daughter Sue Heck and We Couldn’t Be More Excited

ABC’s hit sitcom The Middle sadly ended after nine seasons in May, but now the network has announced that a spin-off show about daughter Sue Heck is in the works!

On Tuesday, Aug. 14, Entertainment Weekly revealed that ABC has offically greenlit the project and actress Eden Sher will reprise her role as awkward middle Heck daughter, Sue, in the upcoming series. 

“Cue the Sue happy dance. More Sue Heck is on the way. The series follows the twenty-something adventures of eternal optimist Sue Heck as she leaves the small town of Orson, [IN] to navigate the ups and downs of a career and young adulthood in the big city of Chicago,” ABC said in a statement. 

The Middle creators Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline will also serve as writers and executive producers on the yet-to-be-titled spin-off series. The Middle previously premiered back in September 2009 and followed the lower middle class Indiana couple Mike and Frankie Heck as they struggled with their home lives, work, and raising a family. 

Frankie was portrayed by Everybody Loves Raymond alum Patricia Heaton while Mike was played by actor Neil Flynn. In addition to daughter Sue, the Hecks had two sons named Axl (Charlie McDermott) and Brick (Atticus Shaffer). 

If Sue’s spin-off show does eventually get a series order after the pilot episode airs, the program will be the fourth spin-off show in ABC’s TV line-up. A new spin-off of The Goldbergs titled Schooled will be coming to the small screen later this year and the new Grey’s Anatomy spin-off, Station 19, is currently airing its first season on the network. Plus, The Conners spin-off of the recently cancelled Roseanne is now officially in the works. We can’t wait to hear more about The Middle‘s new show in the coming months!
