Actor William Shatner, 95, has shocked fans with an unexpected career move that has everybody buzzing. His announcement came just days after the beloved Star Trek and T.J. Hooker star opened up about the aggressive cancer battle he navigated in 2023.
On July 16, Shatner’s surprising next move was announced via Instagram. The beloved actor will be appearing at Riot Fest 2026, which takes place in Chicago, Illinois, in September.
The caption of the Riot Fest announcement post teased, “After years of writing letters… Riot Fest 2026. Now with 100% more williamshatner, with his heavy metal band The *uckers. Appearing Sunday. Tickets on sale now.”
The three-day music festival has dozens of music acts lined up, including many iconic singers and bands. However, Shatner’s addition has attracted significant attention, and fans are excited.
A few hours after Riot Fest announced that Shatner would join the event, the actor himself recorded a video confirming the news. The video was shared as a reel on the event’s Instagram page.
Shatner said, “I’ve been digging around, finding all those letters you sent me, and I decided, you’re such big fans of mine, that I’m gonna debut my heavy metal record at Riot Fest.”
He added, “I hope you’re there, and I hope I’m there.”
The iconic actor also joked about the rider he’ll have for the event, which includes a bowl of sauerkraut.
On July 4, Shatner reflected on his battle with cancer in an interview with TVLine.
Shatner noted that both he and his daughter were diagnosed with stage four cancer several years ago. His daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, had stage four breast cancer, while Shatner himself was diagnosed with stage four melanoma and prostate cancer.

Both father and daughter endured intensive treatments for quite some time to win their cancer battles, and both are doing well now.
Shatner may be a 95-year-old cancer survivor, but he’s not done with the entertainment industry yet. His appearance at Riot Fest will be the first-ever live performance for The *uckers.
According to People, “The performance will reimagine songs from throughout Shatner’s musical catalog while also previewing material from his forthcoming heavy metal album, What the F Is Heavy Metal.”
Fans were quick to express their enthusiasm for Shatner’s Riot Fest gig.
“We will Mosh EXTRA Hard for you, Mr. Shatner,” one fan shared on Instagram.
“This is going to be the best artist at @riot_fest hands down. This outdoes the Replacements,” declared another fan.
Someone else admitted, “I’ve never been more excited about a thing I never knew existed.”
