10 Years Ago Today, ‘General Hospital’ Fans Finally Met ‘The Most Evil Cassadine of Them All’
Valentin Cassadine debuted on ‘General Hospital’ on July 8, 2016, portrayed by James Patrick Stuart. Revisit his most memorable storylines and relationships.
For years, General Hospital fans listened to the diabolical Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) go on and on about her stepson Valentin, “the most evil Cassadine of them all,” the one even the fearsome Helena feared. Ten years ago, on July 8, 2016, we finally met the most evil Cassadine of them all and discovered that Helena had nothing to be scared of at all.
Theo the Groundskeeper
All My Children alum James Patrick Stuart, who played an unhinged Will Cortlandt from 1989 to 1992, was cast as this infamous Cassadine, but when Stuart made his debut, he wasn’t Valentin at all. Instead, he introduced himself as Theo, the groundskeeper on Cassadine Island. Sam (Kelly Monaco), Drew (Billy Miller), Laura (Genie Francis), Kevin (Jon Lindstrom), Nikolas (Nick Stabile), and Ava (Maura West) were all there. They trusted Theo at first, until he finally revealed himself as Valentin, had a fight with Nikolas, and shot Laura’s son. Nikolas fell out of the window and Laura blamed him for her son’s death for years, until Nikolas was revealed to be alive.

Despite being arrested, Valentin beat all charges against him and arrived in Port Charles. His first order of business was to have a one-night stand with Nina Reeves (Michelle Stafford), whom he eventually married. Valentin and Nina genuinely fell in love, but she always knew he couldn’t get Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) out of his mind. It turned out that Valentin and Anna were in WSB training together, but Anna barely remembered him. Valentin believed that Anna had bedded him while they were in training. He was later to learn that he really slept with her twin sister, Alex.
Valentin Settles Down
Valentin decided to take up residence in Wyndemere with Nina and his young daughter, Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez), whose mother was Lulu Spencer. As the tale goes, Helena stole one of Lulu’s (Emme Rylan) eggs and fertilized it with Valentin’s sperm. A woman named Claudette (Bree Williamson) was the gestational host, but when Lulu learned that Charlotte was hers, she sued for custody. Valentin and Lulu ended up sharing Charlotte, with Nina as her beloved stepmom.

To win Nina back after she divorced him for bringing the evil Peter (Wes Ramsey) to town, Valentin wanted to find the daughter she thought had died when she was pregnant and in a 20-year coma. When the search turned up empty, Valentin hired Sasha (Sofia Mattsson) to pose as Nina’s daughter. Lulu learned the truth and said to Nina, who revealed all at the altar before, ending her second wedding to Valentin.
With Nina (now played by Cynthia Watros) refusing to forgive him, Valentin had a one-night stand with Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton), who later tried to claim she was pregnant with his baby. Brook Lynn even presented Valentin with another daughter, Bailey, but she turned out to be Maxie’s (Kirsten Storms) daughter with Peter.
Valentin Gets the Girl…Twice
Valentin had been in love with Anna for decades, so by 2021, GH decided to finally pair them. Anna and Valentin became quite popular and even went on the run for months when she was accused of shooting Lucy (Lynn Herring). Anna was also there for Valentin when he learned that the woman who called him evil was not his stepmother, but his mother. And his father wasn’t Mikkos Cassadine. He was Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy).

After a 2023 adventure in Greenland, Valentin and Anna returned home to settle into life as a couple. Valentin even bought a new house, but Charlotte had decided Anna was the enemy and began stalking her. When she broke into Anna’s new apartment just to scare her, a terrified Anna shot the teen. That was the beginning of the end for Anna and Valentin. A year later, Anna discovered that Valentin could be in some serious legal trouble, so she warned him to skip town with Charlotte.
After some time on the run, Valentin ended up in an international prison, but escaped months later, only to take up residence in Carly’s (Laura Wright) attic. Valentin unexpectedly fell for Carly and is finally free to be with her. Together, Valentin and Carly helped bring down the bad guys, so Valentin has been exonerated and they are free to be together, just as Anna is back in Port Charles…
