Cassius Faison’s Newly-Revealed Origin Story Has ‘General Hospital’ Fans Scratching Their Heads
‘General Hospital’ fans spot plot holes in Cassius Faison’s backstory as his origins retcon creates timeline inconsistencies with Nathan’s established history on the soap.
General Hospital fans learned a whole lot more about what makes Cassius Faison (Ryan Paevey) tick, as well as how he became Cassius Faison, on the Tuesday, June 9th episode, but something about his story didn’t add up. While Cassius appears to be telling the truth, the soap once again appears to have created multiple plot holes.
Cassius’ Back Story Makes Little Sense
Liesl Obrecht (Kathleen Gati) was shocked to learn that the man who had been calling himself Natan West for nearly a year was not Nathan after all. While he is her son, he is the son she thought had died in childbirth. She was told one of her twins was stillborn, but it turned out that Liesl’s sister, Madeline, only told her one baby had died. She gave the other baby to his father, Cesar Faison (Anders Hove), to raise, while Madeline (Donna Mills) raised Nathan, whom she named James Nathan Reeves.
However, there are a few problems with this newly created backstory for a newly created retcon character. First, the only reason Madeline raised Nathan was to keep him from his diabolical father. Second, if Faison never knew that Nathan existed, why would he think Liesl’s other son looked exactly like the son he had raised? This is something curious fans have been asking on social media.
“So Madeline sold off Cassius to Faison so that Liesl could keep Nathan, only to take and raise Nathan herself to keep him safe from Faison? And Faison raised Cassius and Liesl never knew about or saw him?” one fan asked on X.
As others pointed out in the same replies, Liesl and Faison spent years on the run together. How did she never meet either of his sons, especially when one son looked like the boy her sister was raising?
Others may have felt Cassius’ backstory had a lot to be desired, but the scenes in which it was revealed were so well done and entertaining that they’ll give the retcon story a pass. Still, they acknowledged that the story makes little sense.
“Kathleen Gati doing heavy lifting to make this scene even a little plausible,” another viewer noted. “Liesl had twins, Madeline said other twin died. Why would she give the twin to Faison? Wouldn’t Faison recognize Madeline’s son as a twin to the son he’s raising? How did Liesl not see Cassius ever?”
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and streams each weeknight on Hulu.
