Shook. What will Chandler say?” Claudia Oshry — who hosts The Morning Toast and is a comedian known as “Girl With No Job”captioned a Twitter clip of the two hugging it out in a Big Apple restaurant on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Tom, 73, portrayed Courteney’s character Monica’s boyfriend Richard on 10 episodes over the course of Friends‘ 10 seasons, which ran from 1994 until 2004. During a previous interview with The AV Club, Tom opened up about his decision to join the hit sitcom to play Monica’s love interest. “I knew I liked Courteney because I’d already done a screen test with her for a part she was too young for [in Folks], so that kind of fit perfectly because I knew was a good actor she was, and I knew we could work together,” he recalled.

In a 2016 interview, the series’ executive producer Scott Silveri revealed that Courteney, 54, and Tom’s off-screen chemistry actually helped the showrunners write their Season 2 romance. “With Courteney and Tom Selleck, if I’m not mistaken, there was no sense [at first] that was going to become a relationship with a capital ‘R,'” he told Vulture. “They went into that, and it was going to be one episode, two tops. And then they had such good chemistry, the producers and the writers at the time decided to explore it a little more.”

Though many fans loved Monica and Richard’s relationship, the two characters eventually broke up and Mon ended up with Chandler Bing, who was portrayed by Matthew Perry. During his chat with Vulture, Silveri also revealed that the Friends writers had no formal plans to make Monica and Chandler a couple either but the storyline just blossomed over time. “There were plans, but there was no [final] decision. It was always, ‘We’re gonna see how it feels… We’re gonna see how it plays to the audience,’ and then go forward from there. It was sound producing on their part,” he shared.
