Iconic Actress Doris Day Opens Up About Her Passion for Animals
“I’ve been involved in animal rescue efforts since the early ‘70s,” Doris Day, now 90 and founder of the Doris Day Animal Foundation, tells ‘Closer,’ admitting that her role as a champion for animals became more important to her than her film career.
“I wanted my name to be tied to a cause more than movie roles or musical acts – to encompass the broader spectrum of animal care,” she says.

For the past 40 years, the legendary movie star has used the resources of her namesake organization to help improve the lives of animals and help as many as possible find permanent, loving homes.
“I started to see a bigger need for pet welfare,” explains Doris. “It seems like every day I saw a stray dog or cat wandering on the side of the road. You could tell that they were starving and some were even injured! That broke my heart.”
