Kathleen Turner Says Actors Are More Vain Than Actresses: ‘My Vanity Has Been Knocked Out of Me’

If there’s no thing that Kathleen Turner has no problem with is sharing her opinion, regardless of how others may feel about it, and she recently revealed that she believes actors are way more vain than actresses.

The 64-year-old spoke with Times Magazine about many things including her illness and her career, revealing what she truly thinks about actors. “I have never seen an actor pass a mirror without looking at it,” she tells the outlet. But when it comes to herself, the actress says she’s not very vain at all. “I’m turning 65 in a couple of months, so most of that has been knocked out of me. But I probably hold my cooking in too high a regard. I love my turkey meatball. Everyone does.”

These days the Romancing the Stone star deals with rheumatoid arthritis, as she was diagnosed with it in 1992. “I wanted to keep my illness quiet,” the Oscar-nominated actress continues. “No producer wants to hear that I may not be able to walk tomorrow. But I didn’t want to take any of the painkillers the doctors were prescribing because I knew how addictive they were. I just wouldn’t do it.” She adds, “So my answer was to abuse alcohol which wasn’t exactly the smartest thing to do either.”

Kathleen once opened up to Daily Mail and spoke more on her illness, saying, “Waking up with that deep bone ache is very depressing. I had some tough times. Last year was hell because my medication stopped working. I’m now on something that seems to be working better, but I’m in constant pain.”

She said the disorder — that affects many joints, including those in the hands and feet — has also made her gain weight and feel very insecure about her body. “I’m much too heavy. Every time I look in a mirror I think I’ve got to lose weight! I try to eat healthily. I work out. But I can’t seem to shift it,” she explained. “When I was younger, I was happy with my body. I was a great athlete. It was never about how it looked to me. It was about what my body would do. If a director said, ‘Jump across the room, now!’ I could do it and that was exhilarating.”
