Liev Schreiber Accepts That He’ll Never Be Cool To His 2 Sons: ‘It’s Impossible!’

We suppose the demographic that Liev Schreiber attracts isn’t one that includes his two kids. According to the Ray Donovan actor, he has now come to terms with the fact that being a Hollywood star just isn’t that impressive to his sons.

“You’re never cool to your own kids,” the 51-year-old admitted to Ellen DeGeneres while he guest-starred on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Wednesday, Jan. 9. “I don’t know anybody who is cool to their own kids. It’s like… I’ve just accepted the fact that it’s impossible.”

However, the 60-year-old TV host didn’t buy what Liev was saying about his two children, Alexander “Sasha” Pete, 11, and Samuel Kai, 10, whom he shares with his former partner Naomi Watts. Considering that Liev was the voice of characters in two of 2018’s most acclaimed animated films, Isle of Dogs and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Ellen figured he was bluffing.

But even after Sasha and Samuel joined their father at the premiere of Isle of Dogs back in March, Liev expressed how obvious it was that they weren’t convinced. In fact, Liev’s motivation to be a character’s voice in an animated movie was inspired by his two boys. “About five years ago, I told Naomi, I ‘really want to do stuff for the kids’ and I made a commitment to be in animated movies,” the Scream actor explained.

The dad-of-two even went as far as trying to get booked for any animated movie there was. “I told my agents and I really went after them. And I got some really good animated movies,” Liev said of his plan to knock his kids’ socks off.  It didn’t seem to have worked, though. “My kids, their reaction to them is, ‘Yeah, but you’re just a voice.’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I’m one of the main characters!’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, but you’re the bad guy.’” Ha!

Even though his plan backfired, Liev said that about four years ago, he “kind of committed” himself to doing more special things for his brood. But he’ll probably give up on trying to get his kids’ stamp of approval. “I’ll never be cool,” Liev admitted.
