Poor Meg! Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle looked stunning in a one-shoulder black Givenchy dress when she made a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Monday, Dec. 10. But, according to a new report, Meg’s first choice of a gown for the special night was actually shot down by the Palace before the event took place.

“Meghan had two different outfit options for the Fashion Awards on Monday night. Both were sent to her by Givenchy. The one she wore wasn’t her first choice but is the one the Palace approved,” a source close to the pregnant royal revealed to Us Weekly on Thursday, Dec. 13. “She still looked really elegant, but I wonder what her choice was for the Palace to still allow a one-shoulder dress.”

Meghan’s Givenchy dress wasn’t the only part of her glam look that made headlines after photos of her at the British Fashion Awards hit the internet earlier this week. First, the Duchess’ black nail polish seemingly broke royal protocol since Queen Elizabeth reportedly only approves of royal women wearing light shades on their nails, such as her favorite Essie polish, “Ballet Slippers.”

Prince Harry’s wife also gave a sweet nod to her father-in-law, Prince Charles, with her jewelry at the event. “Honored to see the beautiful Duchess of Sussex wearing our bangles and stud earrings proudly made by artisans of the @TurquoiseMountain foundation in Afghanistan,” jewelry designer Pippa Small gushed in an Instagram post alongside a picture of the beaming Duchess. While Meg has worn Pippa’s jewelry before, these specific pieces were special because Charles helped establish the Turquoise Mountain Foundation back in 2006.
