Michelle Pfeiffer Reveals Why She Returned to Acting at 59 After She “Disappeared” From Hollywood

Welcome back! Michelle Pfeiffer opened up in a new interview about her years-long hiatus from showbiz and revealed why she finally decided to reignite her acting career at age 59. According to the Hollywood vet, she is happy to work again now that her two children — daughter Claudia, 24, and son Henry, 23, whom she shares with husband David E. Kelley — have moved out.

“I’m an empty nester now,” Michelle — who appears in Darren Aronofsky‘s creepy thriller mother! — told Interview magazine. “I’ve never lost my love for acting. I feel really at home on the movie set. I’m a more balanced person, honestly, when I’m working.”

She added, “But I was pretty careful about where I shot, how long I was away, whether or not it worked out with the kids’ schedule. And I got so picky that I was unhireable. And then I don’t know, time just went on. I disappeared, yeah.”

During her chat with Interview, the blonde beauty — who rose to fame in 1983 thanks to her role as Elvira Hancock in Scarface — also said that she still sometimes feels uncomfortable on set despite her years of experience.

“I think that’s because I started working fairly quickly and I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have any formal training. I didn’t come from Juilliard,” Michelle — who is also known for her roles in 2001’s I Am Sam and 2002’s White Oleander — explained. “I was just getting by and learning in front of the world. So I’ve always had this feeling that one day they’re going to find out that I’m really a fraud, that I really don’t know what I’m doing.”

We have a feeling Michelle definitely knows what she’s doing these days. Aside from mother!, the Oscar nominee is also starring in Murder on the Orient Express, a mystery film based on the detective novel by Agatha Christie, which is set to hit theaters this November.
