Amazing! Elton John blew us away as he performed “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” at the 2020 Oscars on Sunday, February 9. The iconic singer proved he’s one of Hollywood’s most talented stars as he sang a powerful rendition of his hit tune from the 2019 film Rocketman.

Elton, 72, took the stage during the 92nd annual Academy Awards wearing a blinged-out purple suit. The “I’m Still Standing” crooner — who is nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song — was seated at the piano in front of a giant pair of his iconic star-shaped sunglasses.

Earlier in the night, Elton seemed to skip the red carpet. The legendary performer, who hit the Academy Awards red carpet likely brought along longtime husband David Furnish as his date for the A-list event.

Although Rocketman was critically acclaimed following the movie’s release in May 2019, Elton actually struggled with coming to terms with the film. While chatting with The Guardian around the time, the Grammy Award winner — who shares kids Zachary, 9, and Elijah, 7, with the British filmmaker, 57 — revealed why the movie was so emotional for him.

“I was in the cinema for about 15 minutes before I started crying,” he recalled at the time. “Not crying as in the occasional tear quietly trickling down my cheek: really sobbing, in that loud, unguarded, emotionally destroyed way that makes people turn around and look at you with alarmed expressions.”

“I wasn’t prepared for the power of what I was seeing,” he continued of the film, which is “about the fantastical human story of Elton John’s breakthrough years,” according to IMDb. “The whole experience of watching someone else pretend to be you on screen, of seeing things you remember happening again in front of your eyes, is a very weird, disconcerting one, like having an incredibly vivid dream.”

Elton wasn’t the only one who had weird feelings toward the movie at first. “I was terrified — it was an awesome responsibility,” David, who helped produce the epic biopic, revealed to Page Six at the time. “When I sat next to him … it was without question the most anxious [moment] of my life.”
