Rob Lowe Says Every ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ Star Wants a Sequel, but Fans Aren’t Convinced
Rob Lowe says a ‘St. Elmos Fire’ sequel is in development with the original cast, but many fans are skeptical the Brat Pack classic needs a return.
More than 40 years after St. Elmo’s Fire debuted in theaters, Rob Lowe says the cast is eager to reunite for a sequel. There’s just one problem: many fans of the iconic movies of the ’80s aren’t convinced the Brat Pack classic should return.
The original film, released on June 28, 1985, starred a handful of actors and actresses who went on to become huge movie stars, including Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, Andrew McCarthy, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, and Emilio Estevez. Lowe says they “all want to do” a sequel that’s currently in development.
During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Lowe teased fans with a fresh update. He has talked about a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel before, but based on his latest update, actual progress is being made on the concept.
“We’re writing the script for [a sequel to] St. Elmo’s Fire,” Lowe said when Kelly Clarkson brought up the topic. He phrased it in a more cautionary way than Clarkson did, though.
She teased him, “Just do it or don’t,” and Lowe responded, “I’m trying. I’m trying to get it done.”
Lowe shared, “I’m excited, because I think that the reason that St. Elmo’s Fire…continues to mean a lot to people was it’s a great snapshot…of your 20s.”
He continued, “Everybody wants to do it, and we’ve just gotta get the script right. That’s what we’re working on.”
This is not the first time that Lowe has suggested that the original cast is all on board with the idea of filming a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel.
In fact, one Reddit user pointed out that after Lowe’s tease with Clarkson, it seems he’s shared similar updates at least twice before in the last couple of years.
St. Elmo’s Fire is an ’80s movie that regularly pops up in various Reddit discussions, but not in the way that some might anticipate. Plenty of shows and movies from that era have held up well over the past few decades.
However, a lot of people online seem to believe that St. Elmo’s Fire is an exception. If that consensus is accurate, the perception that a sequel is something fans really want to see might be overestimated.
“I probably liked the original more than most, but please, no,” one fan shared in a new Reddit thread on the topic.
A far more blunt Redditor declared, “Not a soul wants to know what these characters are all doing in their early 60’s.”
Someone else added, “This original is a poor movie but an excellent time capsule with a great theme song. Let it rest.”
Another commenter suggested, “That’s the one Brat Pack film we’re the least nostalgic for.”
Will a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel ever really hit movie screens? Despite Lowe’s updates, it sounds as if the potential project still has quite a way to go yet, so fans will need to stay tuned for further updates.
