The Iconic Movie That Defined the ’80s Also Changed Its Star’s Life Forever
Celebrate 42 years of ‘The Karate Kid,’ the 1984 classic starring Ralph Macchio that inspired millions, and remains a beloved 80s masterpiece.
Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita starred in a movie that most people didn’t expect much from. Much to everyone’s surprise, however, The Karate Kid was a huge hit and launched Macchio into worldwide stardom.
The initial movie, first released on June 22, 1984, was such a success that a multimedia franchise grew from it. There were two sequels in the initial The Karate Kid trilogy, then another three movies were released as “The New Trilogy.”
A television series emerged, and more recently, a multi-season series on Netflix titled Cobra Kai that featured Macchio and several other stars from the original film. Video games, books, and merchandise became available for fans, as well.

Macchio had appeared in a few projects before The Karate Kid. He played Jeremy Andretti in a handful of Eight Is Enough episodes, and more notably, he played Johnny Cade in the iconic film The Outsiders.
It was The Karate Kid, however, that became Macchio’s signature project. In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Macchio admitted that playing Daniel LaRusso left him typecast, and he didn’t exactly receive a flood of scripts for other projects.
He shared, “I get it. I didn’t not understand that line of thinking. But, it was frustrating.”
While Macchio has a reputation as one of the nicest actors in Hollywood, he was asked if things might have turned out differently if he’d been a bit more aggressive.
Macchio acknowledged that it was possible. However, he added, amid the fame that The Karate Kid brought, he and his wife had welcomed their first child. “That was the magic in my life, not necessarily movies,” he stated.
One fan on Facebook noted that the movie was “One of my all-time favorite films,” adding it is “a masterpiece that never gets old, its themes of perseverance and mentorship continue to inspire.”
Another added, “I loved the movie when I first saw it in theatres and it has remained one of my favorite movies over the years. I watch it often!”
More than four decades after its theater release, many fans consider The Karate Kid to be one of the defining movies of the ’80s. They say it still holds up today, and they continue to rewatch and enjoy the original film.
