For over sixty years, the soap opera Coronation Street has challenged viewers’ perspectives and used its platform to raise awareness of various topical social issues, and today the series announced its newest storyline: the Silent Dangers of Non-Fatal Strangulation.
The iTV soap will raise awareness for the subject as Betsy (Sydney Martin) suffers multiple strokes as a result of a consensual sexual encounter with Dylan (Liam McCheyne), in which he believed he was applying minimal pressure while strangling her.
The storyline is set to take place over the course of the next few months as viewers witness Betsy’s recovery journey as she navigates her new normal once she transitions from the hospital back home. It is expected to highlight how having a stroke at such a young age has an emotional and physical impact on the person.
Executive producer Kate Brooks shared her thoughts on the story in a press release, saying, “Coronation Street has always pushed boundaries when it comes to telling challenging, thought-provoking stories, and this story is no exception. Shining a light on the dangers of this all too common trend, we wanted to chart Betsy and Dylan’s story as they navigate the catastrophic implications of a moment of naivety, and the impact not only on them, but also on their families and the wider community.”
To tell the storyline properly, the Coronation Street team worked closely with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), The Stroke Association, and Safeline. Those experts assisted in meeting with the production team and actors to help ensure the storyline is portrayed responsibly and assisted in reviewing the scripts for accuracy.
According to IFAS, in a recent survey of 4,100 young adults (aged 16-34), over 55% have either been strangled or strangled someone else during sex.
Brooks added that it was important for the series to get the story right. “By consulting extensively with IFAS, the Stroke Association, and Safeline, we aimed to handle Betsy’s journey with the care and sensitivity it deserves while sparking a difficult and somewhat contentious conversation that helps raise awareness of the risks involved in partaking in such acts.”
Betsy’s storyline begins today, July 15, 2026, and is available to stream on the official Coronation Street YouTube channel as well as BritBox.
