How Did Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Meet?

Michael and Catherine were first introduced at the Deauville Film Festival. “I had been told Michael Douglas wanted to meet me. I was a little nervous because I didn’t quite know what he wanted to meet me about,” she said during a 2001 interview with Larry King.

The Chicago actress said she saw Michael in the lobby of her hotel, but he didn’t end up noticing her.

“I said to my brother, who was there at the time, ‘I guess he doesn’t really want to meet me that much, because he just walked right past me and he didn’t even know it was me!’” she recalled.

Later that night, pals Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith formally introduced the two.

Michael revealed during a 2016 appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show that his first time hanging out with Catherine was a bit awkward.

“I said to her after about half an hour [of hanging out], ‘You know, I’m going to be the father of your children,’” he said. “It sounded good, and she said, ‘You know, I’ve heard a lot about you and I’ve seen a lot about you, and I think it’s time I say goodnight.’”

The couple got engaged in 1999. One year later, they announced they were expecting their first child together.

“We obviously were hoping to hang onto this information a little longer than expected but, yep, Catherine’s expecting, and both of us couldn’t be happier,” Michael told People in 2000.

Their son, Dylan Douglas, was born in August 2000. A few months later in November 2000, Michael and Catherine got married at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

In April 2023, the Behind the Candelabra actor and the Mask of Zorro actress welcomed their second child together, daughter Carys Zeta Douglas. Michael is also a father to son Cameron Douglas from his marriage to his first wife, Diandra Morrell, whom he was married to from 1977 to 1995.

Michael Douglas Battled Throat Cancer

In 2010, Michael was diagnosed with throat cancer, describing it as “a fight.”

“The hardest part is seeing his fatigue, because Michael is never tired,” Catherine said at the time. “If there’s anything Michael has, it’s strength.”

The following year, Michael announced that he was cancer-free during a January 2011 Today appearance after undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

“I feel good, relieved,” he said. “The tumor is gone. But, you know, I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain.”

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Briefly Split

Fans were shocked in August 2013 when the Hollywood twosome briefly split.

“Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage,” a rep for the actress told CNN at the time.

A month later, Michael shared an update with People on their marriage strain. “We’re working things out, talking, and we’ll see how she goes,” he said.

Michael and Catherine attended the 14th annual Monte Cristo Awards in NYC in April 2014, seemingly revealing they were back together. The Kominsky Method alum revealed to Ellen DeGeneres that their relationship was “stronger than ever” in April 2015.

“It can’t be a one-way street,” he said about his marriage. “But I’m crazy about her. And yeah, I think every couple has their difficult times. The only problem is, as you well know, we’re all in the public eye, and it tends to get a little more exposed than most.”

The duo celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary later that year. Catherine and Michael became grandparents in December 2017 when Cameron and his girlfriend, Viviane Thibes, welcomed their first child together. The couple’s second grandchild was born in 2020.

In April 2025, a source told Closer that Catherine would be heading out to film her next project, Kill Jackie, meaning she would have to be apart from her husband while working.

“It’s not ideal for him because he would prefer she never leave his side, but he also loves to cheer her on and see her succeed so he’s sucking it up and promising her he’s fine with it but he admits to his friends how dreadful things are without her around,” the insider said. “He says he doesn’t sleep well when she’s not in the bed, after so many years together it’s like missing his security blanket.”
