“The whole family has been watching I Love Lucy for years. Cate says the kids would never forgive her if she didn’t take this on. They love the idea of their mom playing this lady they love on TV,” the insider revealed, referring to Cate’s sons Dashiell, 15, Roman, 13, and Ignatius, 9, and daughter Edith, 2, with husband Andrew Upton. “Cate is a chameleon who can really sink her teeth into a role,” Michael Stern, author of I Had a Ball: My Friendship With Lucille Ball, also told Closer. “Lucy would be honored to have someone of Cate’s caliber playing her.” Watch the video below to see what Cate has said about playing Lucy!

Oscar-winning producer Aaron reportedly started writing the script for the authorized Lucille biopic two years ago. The film was then recently picked up by Amazon Studios, _E! News _ reported, and the story will span the 20-year marriage between Lucille and her husband and business partner, Desi Arnaz. Lucy and Desi also has the blessing of the couple’s adult children. Lucie Arnaz, 66, and her 64-year-old brother Desi Arnaz, Jr. are set to produce the film, along with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Steve Tisch from the Escape Artists production company.

Lucy and Desi’s relationship was known for being tumultuous at times, but their love story is still revered as one of the most iconic Hollywood romances ever. The couple met when Lucy was 28 and Desi was 23 while they were both working on set of the 1940 film Too Many Girls. It was love at first sight — so much so, that they eloped nearly six months later. “Putting aside any and all personal problems they might have had, I would defy anyone to deny that they were one of the 20th century’s greatest couples,” theater legend Carol Channing, who was a close friend of the couple, previously told Closer.

But despite their issues, which mainly stemmed from Desi’s infidelity while he toured as the leader of his Latin band, they continued to fight for their marriage. Lucy felt that working on the same production together would keep Desi’s wandering eyes on her — which is how their iconic TV series I Love Lucy was born. “Lucy first thought to do [the show] with Desi because she knew it would keep him in one place,” Frank Gorey, Lucy’s former chauffeur of 30 years, previously revealed. The couple divorced in 1960, but they still remained soulmates even after their split, and Carol previously said, “They spoke so lovingly of each other, you almost forgot they weren’t together anymore.”
