Donnie Wahlberg is thrilled to be bringing the Blue Bloods franchise to his hometown. The actor and singing sensation spoke out about what’s to come for his new CBS series, Boston Blue, where he will be reprising the role of Danny Reagan.

The series will see Danny become a member of the Boston PD after spending more than a decade working in New York as a member of the NYPD with his family. He appeared on Morning MAGIC with Sue and Kendra to talk about how he was excited to return to his roots after he was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, with his famous family.

“You have to remember your roots from Boston because no one in Boston will ever let you forget,” Donnie, 55, said. “First of all I’m a proud Bostonian, I love the city. I love coming back every chance I get and I will love filming there.”

He also spoke about going to Celtics games and bumping into family members, joking that they were cousins of cousins and distant relatives.

It’s surely going to be fun seeing Donnie reprise his role of Danny in a new setting. Blue Bloods was filmed in the Big Apple for all 14 seasons of the show. Fans of the crime drama series were heartbroken that it got the boot from CBS in December 2024.

Donnie said that he and his castmates tried to do everything they possibly could to save the show from going off the air. However, the network didn’t budge on the decision.

“I think one of the things we haven’t really talked about is having worked so long with the crew that we had in New York City,” the New Kids on the Block singer said during an interview with Fox News Digital in December 2024. “I personally — and I’m sure some of the other castmates — felt bad. I felt sad.”

“Lost Ones” – Danny and Baez’s investigation into the death of a chess hustler is complicated by interference from the victim’s son. Also, Erin is offered an endorsement of her run for D.A. by an influential Harlem pastor in exchange for a professional favor; Gormley comes to Frank with a request regarding a disabled officer who has a connection to Danny; and Jamie tries to make amends with a man he regrets putting away as a young officer, on BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Jan. 20 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. “Like, we tried to keep the show going,” Donnie added. “We tried to help the show carry on, and we couldn’t. We couldn’t do it. You know, we did everything we could, everything in our power, to have the show carry on.”

However, Boston Blue is certainly bringing a new life to the franchise. In the series expansion, Danny will be “paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family” once he is in Boston.

A teaser trailer shared online showed the background of Boston, which will be Danny’s new playground. The trailer also revealed that Boston Blue will officially be hitting the CBS lineup in the fall of 2025.

“AY!!!!!! This makes me so happy!!! We were just saying how much we miss Blue Bloods!!!!” one person commented on the trailer.

“Can’t wait. I do hope some of the old cast makes some appearances. Still so sad that Blue Bloods has ended. Still miss it so much,” another person said.

“Can’t wait! Fridays aren’t the same without Blue Bloods! I miss the Reagans!” a third person added.

“Best of luck, Dad! So excited to see Boston on screen!!!” Donnie’s onscreen son Andrew Terraciano commented underneath the teaser trailer.
