Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has made history — but not in a good way.
On Thursday, February 19, the former prince was arrested on the morning of his 66th birthday for “suspicion of misconduct in public office,” per the BBC, seemingly related to claims that he shared confidential information with Jeffrey Epstein during his time as trade envoy. Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing in his connection to the late sex offender.
The former Duke of York‘s arrest — which occurred at his home on his brother King Charles III’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk — marks the first time a royal has been arrested in modern history, according to People.

While Andrew and Charles’ sister, Princess Anne, was convicted of a criminal offense in 2002, as she pleaded guilty to a charge that her dog attacked two children under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, she was never taken into police custody, per People.
Following Andrew’s arrest, the 77-year-old sovereign — who previously stripped Andrew of his royal honors and duties in 2025 — released a statement.

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office. What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities,” Charles’ statement read. “In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”
“As this process continues, it would not be right for me to comment further on this matter. Meanwhile, my family and I will continue in our duty and service to you all,” the statement concluded.
