George Clooney Says Meghan Markle Has Been ‘Pursued and Vilified and Chased’ Like Princess Diana

No more! George Clooney is done with all of the negative backlash that his friend Meghan Markle has been receiving. The 57-year-old actor sweetly defended Meghan, 37, at a press panel for his new Hulu series Catch-22 and said that the royal has been receiving the same type of public scrutiny that Princess Diana did before her tragic death.

“They’re just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere, she’s been pursued and vilified,” George said about Prince Harry‘s wife, according to Australia’s Who magazine. “She’s a woman who is seven months pregnant and she has been pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was and it’s history repeating itself. We’ve seen how that ends.”

Prince Harry and his older brother, Prince William, sadly lost their beloved mom, Diana, in an August 1997 car crash when the royal was just 36 years old. And today, more than 20 years later, George is worried that the same thing might happen to Meghan.

While recently speaking to the press, George also revealed that he’ll likely not be named Baby Sussex’s godfather when Harry, 34, and Meghan welcome their first royal baby this spring. “Oh yes, I’ll be godfather of the royals apparently,” he joked before adding, “No! I’m a father of twins, I have enough s–t to deal with — literally!”

It’s a shame that George won’t be a godfather to Meghan’s baby because Meghan and his wife, Amal Clooney, are apparently “really close friends.” A source previously told E! News that “Amal and Meghan are much more friendly with each other and talk more regularly than George and Harry do.” After all, George and Amal, 41, did attend the royal couple’s wedding in May 2018 and have allegedly vacationed with them at their Lake Como house in Italy.

“Meghan really looks up to Amal,” the insider shared. “They have been able to relate on a lot about their lifestyles, especially how to deal with being thrust into new situations in the public spotlight. Amal is like a confidante to Meghan.”
