Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines made a major life decision when they announced in 2017 that they would be leaving HGTV. Years later, many loyal HGTV viewers are wondering what happened to the couple and if they are still married?

Why Did Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines Leave HGTV?

The home renovation twosome, who got married in 2003, announced in a blog post in September 2017 that they decided to leave HGTV after skyrocketing to fame with the show Fixer Upper.

“It is with both sadness and expectation that we share the news that season 5 of Fixer Upper will be our last,” they said in a statement. “While we are confident that this is the right choice for us, it has for sure not been an easy one to come to terms with. Our family has grown up alongside yours, and we have felt you rooting us on from the other side of the screen. How bittersweet to say goodbye to the very thing that introduced us all in the first place.”

Chip and Joanna, who share kids Drake, Ella Rose, Duke, Emmie Kay and Crew, told Inc. magazine that they were just simply looking to go in a different direction with their work than what HGTV was providing them with.

“The show was limiting our involvement in what was taking place here in this office,” Joanna said. “We were pouring so much time into doing this thing that had to fit in this format, and it was a conflict with our growing business.”

“As things started getting complicated,” Chip said. “We made a bet on what Jo and I have always bet on. We bet on ourselves. We knew there was a real chance that everything else would go away without the show.”

In April 2018, HGTV aired the final episode of Fixer Upper. In November 2018, Chip and Joanna announced that they were going to be launching Magnolia Network, as part of their growing business empire. While the official launch was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the network finally debuted in January 2022.

Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines Opened Up About Facing Difficult Times

Later on in 2022, Joanna opened up in Magnolia Journal about times in her marriage to Chip where “hearts were broken.”

“In our 20 years of marriage, Chip and I have experienced a little bit of all of it … Times when all hope felt lost and circumstances were out of our control. When all I could think to do was lay face down on the floor in surrender,” she said.

Further, in a March 2023 interview with People, Joanna and Chip acknowledged that building their home improvement empire brick by brick was not easy on their marriage.

“In the first months of our marriage, we were always flipping a house. We were working on this little shop. We had babies early in the process. We pretty quickly had to say, ‘We’re either going to go at each other and blow this thing up, you and I trying to fight each other about every nook and cranny, or we can figure out how to come together as a team,'” he said.

However, he said that they were able to overcome the hardships thrown at them.

“We’ve had our challenges. I don’t want to belittle that piece of the equation,” Chip said at the time. “But Jo and I — I don’t know if it’s our hearts — we’re aligned in this sweet way to where we’ve just always been there for each other.”

“When adversity came against us — when your natural tendency is [to be] almost the ugliest to those people you love, especially in times of real pressure — with Jo and I, we felt adversity and would get together like a little team and say, ‘What do you think the problem is?’ As opposed to maybe typically being like, ‘Well, it’s because of that thing you bought’ or ‘because of that dumb thing you did,’” Chip said.

Joanna is still married to Chip. In June 2024, the couple celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary.

“Twenty One Years. You’ve always had a way of taking a thought or a quiet dream I’ve tucked away, and helped me step into it and make it a reality,” Joanna captioned an Instagram tribute to her hubby. “What a journey, a wild and crazy (yet somehow peaceful) ride. So grateful to God for this life we get to share together.”
