Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban’s Workouts ‘a Huge Help’ to Marriage: ‘Certainly Keeps the Spark Alive’

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban both looked phenomenal while strutting their stuff on the beach in Australia this Christmas – as a source outlines exclusively for Closer how couple’s workouts and eating healthy remain a top priority for the two of them as they enter their 19th year of their marriage. 

“They’re both extremely active and always have been, but lately, they’ve turned their workouts into a chance to bond,” the insider says. “Instead of going off separately with their trainers, they do it together.” 

While vacationing at Sydney beach, Keith, 57, cut a striking figure with wife Nicole, 57. The two were spotted relaxing in the sand and generally enjoying each other’s company over Christmas. That’s all thanks to the statuesque couple making their fitness a top concern as they stare down the barrel at 60.

But even more important than staying fit is what their regime does for their marriage, according to the source, who says, “Whether that’s taking a spin class together, or doing a session in the weight room, or going on a hike, they’ve realized that getting their sweat on as a couple is a great way to strengthen their relationship.” 

Keith and Nicole married in June 2006, after meeting each other the year prior. The Big Little Lies alum had previously been married to former costar and perhaps the most famous man alive at the time, Tom Cruise, but they split years before she met Keith. 

Speaking with People in July 2018, the Eyes Wide Shut star opened up about what she believes has made her marriage so rock solid over the years: “I think it’s knowing that you have to keep contributing to what we call the ‘us.’ You go, ‘Does this work for us?’ ” she said, adding, “When you make an us, it’s yours together — that’s what you create.”

There’s little doubt group workouts aren’t contributing to their “us” idea, as the first source states, “It’s a chance for them to destress and laugh together and have a little healthy competition, as well.” 

With Nicole promoting her new movie, Babygirl, for awards consideration this season and Keith actively touring throughout the U.S. right now, they “rarely have time to go out for date nights, their schedules are always so jam packed, but one thing they never skip is their daily workout, so turning it into a joint thing when they’re in the same city has been a huge help to their marriage.” 

“Nicole is a huge health nut when it comes to what she puts in her body and she used to have to nag Keith to eat healthy. But as he’s gotten older he’s become a lot better about it and now they both encourage each other,” the insider adds.

“He’ll whip her up a gorgeous fruit smoothie if he gets up first in the morning. It means a lot to her because he’s paying attention to what she really enjoys. And it doesn’t hurt that they both look fantastic, that certainly helps to keep the spark alive!”
