Pierce Brosnan Admits Robin Williams’ Tragic Death ‘Still Hurts Deeply’: ‘I Miss Him’

Still fresh in his mind. Pierce Brosnan admitted that he is still being impacted by the loss of his Mrs. Doubtfire costar Robin Williams five years after his tragic and shocking death.

“Oh, Robin, still, his passing still hurts deeply,” the 66-year-old told Esquire in an interviewed published on Wednesday, May 29. “I miss him. His humanity was so far reaching, and joy of people, and love of life, bountiful. … Robin was brilliant.”

The former James Bond star also recalled the first time he met the legendary comedian on the set of their 1993 film. Pierce was asked, “‘Do you want to meet Robin Williams?’ I said, ‘Yeah, sure.’ I went into the makeup trailer and Robin was there. He was sitting at the end of the trailer in his Hawaiian shirt and his big hairy arms, and his hairy legs coming out of his cargo pants. But he had the head of Mrs. Doubtfire.”

“He said, ‘Pierce. Oh Pierce. Oh, you’re so handsome. Oh, look at ya, Pierce. Oh, give us a kiss. Come here, give us a hug,'” he added.

The comedy went on to become a massive success and remains one of Robin’s most notable works. There were even some talks of a sequel before Robin passed. This isn’t the first time that the Mamma Mia star has mentioned Robin and that particular film — he once took to Instagram to share a photo of a classic scene from the movie.

“I remember this day like it was yesterday,” Pierce captioned the photo. “It was a San Francisco morning on the set of Mrs Doubtfire … a drive by fruiting … I thought we would be there all morning trying to get the shot, Robin nailed it on the second take. I am so proud to have been part of that movie and to have known the great Robin Williams.”

Pierce wasn’t the only person who was graced with Robin’s warm personality, fellow actor Matt Damon also recalled how wonderful his Good Will Hunting costar was. “Oh, man, [I have] a lot of Robin Williams memories, good memories of him,” the Jason Bourne star, 48, once told Ryan Seacrest. “And Ben [Affleck] said recently, it’s weird, we always felt like we were going to, we had this incredible debt to pay him back.”

“We thought there would be time to do that and just the abruptness of somebody leaving like that, that realization comes that you’re never going to be able to pay back this incredible thing done for you,” he continued. “That movie got made because Robin said he wanted to do it. That changed the trajectory of our careers completely, forever.”

Robin passed away in 2014 of an apparent suicide. He was 63.
