More than 20 years after becoming one of television’s most recognizable heartthrobs, Jason Lewis has quietly built an entirely different life far from Hollywood. Now he is sharing what his new life looks like, and fans are quite surprised to learn what he’s doing.

For many viewers, Lewis remains best known as Samantha Jones’ ideal partner in Sex and the City, a man who was patient and devoted, seeming almost too good to be real. For many fans, the role defined him as the perfect romantic partner who was steady, patient, and almost idealized.

He spent years in Hollywood after his breakout role, appearing in film and television projects and even competing on Dancing with the Stars. Eventually, he stepped away from the industry.

Today, Lewis lives in Costa Rica, where he is writing an ambitious fantasy book series, he told The Hollywood Reporter.

The scale of Lewis’ book series is ambitious even by publishing standards. The nine-book project consists of three trilogies set in the same universe across different eras.

He explained, “The first trilogy is an idealistic tale. The middle one is when good intentions go terrible…And the last one is more of a redemption story.”

Why Costa Rica? Lewis says he wanted a healthier, slower-paced life with access to good food, surfing, and space to focus on writing. “I surf, and being right next to a beach is very easy motivation for me to stay healthy,” he said. “And I also wanted to learn Spanish.”

The actor recently returned to social media after encouragement from his representation, noting he wants to focus on building a community rather than “performative posting.”

In his return, Lewis teased, “Three years ago, I went quiet — not because I had nothing to say, but because I had something to do.”

The post marked his quiet re-entry into public life after years away from social media.

Lewis explained that what he needed to do involved a creative process that left little time for anything else. “I made my peace with that,” he noted.

The actor received an enthusiastic welcome back from fans and former colleagues. The comment section was filled with Sex and the City memes and notes from fans happy to see him back on social media.

More than two decades after his breakout role, Lewis is still best known to fans who remember him as Smith on Sex and the City. Now, his current life is centered on writing, surfing, and building an expansive fantasy world. It reflects a very different kind of ambition, one that is far removed from the Hollywood spotlight he once inhabited.
