General Hospital fans were stunned when news broke that Kate Mansi would be departing the ABC soap after three years of playing Kristina Corinthos-Davis. She joined the show to much fanfare as a Daytime Emmy-winning soap vet replacing Lexie Ainsworth, who had played Kristina off and on since her teens. Now, Mansi, who got her soap start on Days of our Lives as Abigail Deveraux, has explained the reason for her exit.
Kate Mansi Opens up About Her GH Departure
“I’ve made the very difficult decision to leave General Hospital,” Mansi told soap opera journalist Stephanie Sloane in her newsletter. “I have a few new projects that require my full attention, and with my husband [Matt McInnis] currently producing a series filming primarily abroad, I needed the flexibility to travel while continuing to develop and work in Los Angeles.”
During Mansi’s time on General Hospital, she was involved with an emotionally heavy story in which Kristina became the egg donor and gestational host for her sister, Molly (Kristen Vaganos), and Molly’s partner, TJ (Tajh Bellow). During a fight with Ava Jerome (Maura West) in the latter’s Metro Court hotel room, Kristina tripped on a duffel bag and fell through the window below, nine months pregnant. Tragically, the baby was stillborn.
Mansi also fulfilled her dream of becoming a director while on General Hospital. She directed several episodes of the soap, including one in March in which Molly had an endometrial flare-up, something Mansi knows about all too well as she also lives with the condition.
“I’m incredibly grateful to Frank, ABC, and our writers for the care they gave Kristina,” Mansi said. “It’s been such a meaningful and unforgettable ride. I’ve loved being a fiery Corinthos-Davis girl in such a phenomenal family.”
What happens to Kristina next remains to be seen, but Mansi has wrapped taping at ABC’s Prospect Studios, with her last episode slated to air in June.
General Hospital airs weekdays on ABC and streams each weeknight on Hulu.
