Warning: This post contains spoilers for the premiere episode of The Madison.

Kurt Russell revealed that he was able to draw from his real-life relationship with Goldie Hawn for his latest role in The Madison opposite Michelle Pfeiffer.

The Madison follows Russell’s character Preston Clyburn, who [spoiler alert!] dies in the first episode, prompting his wife Stacy (Pfeiffer, 67) to move from her New York City home to Montana, which was her late husband’s sanctuary.

During an interview with Men’s Health published on Saturday, March 14, Russell, 75, explained how his relationship with longtime partner Hawn, 80, mirrored Preston and Stacy’s.

“Some of the conversations that [Preston and Stacy] have, I’ve had. Goldie and I have had very similar conversations,” he explained. “Their relationship, it’s the kind of relationship you almost never see anymore. It’s a truly loving relationship.”

“It’s not like there’s another shoe to drop. That’s what makes it so difficult for [Michelle’s] character when she loses her husband,” Russell continued. “She’s realizing how much more they could have had that they didn’t have because of something she didn’t do. I think a lot of people relate to that kind of regret.”

“As you get older and you’ve only got so much time left, that doubles things up in terms of looking at what you’ve done in your life so far and what you want to do with the rest of your life,” the Overboard actor added.

Preston finding solace in Montana is something Russell can relate to after he ditched Hollywood to live a quieter life with more land in Colorado, where he hunts and enjoys relative seclusion.

“At a certain point, you find yourself asking whether you’re going to live the life you want to live, or if you’re just going to talk about it,” he told Men’s Health. “And I decided to make the move and live the life I wanted to live. But my business was still primarily out of Los Angeles, so my life’s been split, going back and forth. I’m glad I did what I did.”

“I’ve enjoyed my life the way I’ve wanted to and I’ve been able to continue on in the business too. I was able to make that happen,” Russell concluded. “I could draw on that in The Madison.”

New episodes of The Madison air on Paramount+ on Saturdays.
