Maury Povich revealed that his dream life is only possible because wife Connie Chung became a massive success early on in their relationship.
The former Maury host, 87, sat down with comedian Adam Friedland for Interview Magazine on April 1, where the topic turned to Povich living as a snowbird, splitting his time between Florida, New York and Montana.
“Only because I married Connie Chung,” Povich explained.
When Friedland, 38, joked that he’s a “gold digger,” Povich didn’t balk.
“Absolutely. My wife was making 10 times what I was making when we got married,” he explained. “How’s that?”

According to People, the couple met in 1969 while they were both working at WTTG in Washington DC. At the time, Povich was a notable name while Chung, 79, was just a copygirl. However, she left that station and went on to become a bigger star in broadcast journalism than Povich when they reconnected and began a romantic relationship later in life.
“After bouncing around the country from job to job, I ended up in Los Angeles by 1977, and at that time, I was the second banana to Connie,” Povich recalled to People in 2020. “Connie was the big anchor star at the CBS affiliate and I was her co-act before they cleaned house.”
“Because Connie was the only person I actually knew in Los Angeles, I always said the way to get to Connie’s heart is first, she pities you, and then she can love you,” he quipped at the time. “She pitied the fact that I was fired.”
The couple went on to marry in 1984 and have remained together ever since. Chung and Povich adopted their son, Matthew, 26, in 1995. Meanwhile, he is father to Susan, 61, and Amy Joyce, 58, from his previous marriage to Phyllis Minkoff.
