One of music’s most popular earworms is now going to use its incredibly memorable and popular lyrics to help those dealing with cancer.
People reported on Monday, March 16, that Tommy Tutone’s 1981 hit “867-5309/Jenny” will now dial out to a hotline for people impacted in any way by cancer. The band’s singer, Tommy Heath, 78, is thrilled that his catchy song will now lead people to a helpful resource — especially since it’s a cause that hits close to home.
The singer told the outlet he’s currently dealing with “minor” skin cancer.
“I have some family members who are struggling with cancer,” he told the outlet.
“I’m out on tour with a lot of bands and suddenly somebody’s not there,” he added, noting that cancer can affect everyone.

The number dialing out to a cancer hotline is being done in conjunction with Cancer Support Community (CSC) and Gilda’s Club, named after the late comedian Gilda Radner, who died of ovarian cancer in 1989.
“[Gilda Radner] a big hero of mine,” Heath said. “I’m just glad to be involved.”
CSC CEO Sally Werner told the outlet that dialing CSC-867-5309 [272-867-5309] will put someone in touch with personalized guidance from a trained specialist experienced in supporting individuals impacted by cancer. The helpline is also free to anyone who calls.
“That’s the way I think it ought to work, and I hope it does,” Heath concluded. “I need to give back to the community, the people who have supported me all these years. I’m going to do what I can.”
