If you were a soap fan in the 1980s, there’s a very strong chance you were at one point or another serenaded by the vocal styling of Grammy winner and R&B legend Peabo Bryson.
When the NBC soap opera Santa Barbara premiered in 1984, it needed to differentiate itself from the rest of the daytime lineup. Focusing on a younger demographic than its competitors at the time, Santa Barbara used the tried-and-true Romeo-and-Juliet-style storytelling of two warring families and lovers caught in the crosshairs between the Lockridges and the Capwells.
But it wasn’t just the star-crossed young lovers that kept viewers enticed. The beautiful location shots and use of popular billboard music kept audiences tuning in day after day.
On July 30, 1984, the NBC soap opera Santa Barbara premiered and would go on to captivate audiences worldwide. Telling the story of Joe Perkins, who is reassimilating into the world of Santa Barbara following the wrongful conviction for the murder of Channing Capwell, Joe is determined to get back the life that he lost. After Joe reappears in town, the love of his life, Kelly Capwell, is flying in a helicopter over him as Bryson’s hit single “If Ever You’re In My Arms Again” plays in the background.
One fan recalled the moment on Blue Sky writing, “The end of episode 1 — Kelly, in a helicopter with her new fiancé, locks eyes (🤣🤣) w her former love as he steps off a bus after spending 5 years in prison for murdering her brother, a crime he swears he didn’t commit, all set to Peabo Bryson song — is the QUINTESSENCE of soap opera!!”
The song would go on to be one of the biggest hits on the series for its first year as Joe and Kelly’s theme song.
In 1985, Bryson was approached by One Life to Live to sing and perform a lyrical rendition of the theme song for the ABC soap opera. The song was written by Dave Grusin and Randy Goodrum. Following the success of his 1986 appearance, the soap opera adopted his vocal rendition of the theme song and aired it daily until 1992, when it was replaced by the updated “satin sheets” opening.
Meanwhile, back over at NBC, Bryson’s romantic ballads were all over Santa Barbara‘s sibling soap Days of Our Lives. “Tonight I Celebrate My Love” became the theme song for super couple Bo Brady (Peter Reckell) and Hope Williams (Kristian Alfonso), while “Learning The Ways Of Love” was used in honor of super couple Kimberly Brady (Patsy Pease) and Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy).
In 1992, Bryson’s song “I Found Love” was used to highlight the love story of Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) and Dimitri Marick (Michael Nader), and was even nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award in 1993 for Best Original Song.
Bryson would make an appearance that year on All My Children, performing a rendition of “Tonight I Celebrate My Love”, with Tonya Perkins, for Liva Frye (Pinkins) and Tom Cudahy (Richard Shoberg) wedding reception.
Bryson’s music continues to resonate with fans who have fond memories of the shows associated with his performances. One user wrote on X, “I mean I don’t even get why One Life to Live ever changed their opening! It is an amazing song and MADE OLTL the summer of 86! The drawings and the song just brought it all together. That’s what inspired me to write my own private soap. I still write today.”
Regardless of the network, the show, or the characters involved. Bryson’s music made an undeniable impact on Daytime Television and will forever be remembered for those memories.
