Despite its legendary status in pop culture, a movie version of Gilligan’s Island has never been made and, according to the son of its creator, it never will be, despite his best efforts.

The iconic sitcom, which ran three seasons from 1964 to 1967, followed a group of unlikely castaways stuck on a deserted island after their ship, the S.S. Minnow, hit a storm on what was supposed to be a three-hour tour.

Lloyd J. Schwartz, the son of creator Sherwood Schwartz, recently explained to Woman’s World that the Gilligan’s Island property is split between the Schwartz family, the heirs of comedian Phil Silvers and Warner Bros. — which is currently in the midst of a controversial $111 billion acquisition by Paramount.

“At the moment, I think we’re mired in who’s going to run Warner Brothers after the Paramount acquisition of the company, because Gilligan went from United Artists to MGM to Ted Turner to Turner Pictures, which merged with Warner Brothers,” Schwartz told the outlet in an article published on Wednesday, March 11.

Still, he remains hopeful that something will happen one day. He’s heard many pitches and ideas for what a Gilligan’s Island movie could look like, but nothing has ever gained enough traction. In fact, he’s chronicling the struggle to get a movie made in a yet-unfinished book.

“My book on the making of the Gilligan movie — of which there is none — is on page 610. It’s called Invitation to a Shipwreck,” he revealed. “When I started writing it, it was, ‘Now we’re going to make this movie and I’m taking you with me.’ I’d go into meetings and say, ‘This is what’s going to happen.’ And I was always wrong.”

While a theatrical movie never happened, after the show gained popularity in syndication, several made for TV movies were made, including Rescue from Gilligan’s Island (1978), The Castaways on Gilligan’s Island (1979) and The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island (1981). In addition, three animated spin-offs ran throughout the 1970s and 1980s that featured the actors reprising their roles as voice cast.
