Blue Bloods boasted a cast that was full of new faces and some recognizable ones throughout its 14 seasons. New York City police officer Luis Badillo joined the show in season 12 but met a shocking fate in the season 14 series finale.

Who Was Luis Badillo on ‘Blue Bloods’?

Badillo became Eddie Janko-Reagan’s partner in season 12. The officer, played by Ian Quinlan, got himself into trouble in season 14 when he was caught smoking weed.

While he refused to go to rehab instead of getting drug tested and fired, Jamie Reagan then said he filed a false report against Badillo for smoking, causing Jamie to get a citation. Badillo was off the hook.

Eddie went to visit Badillo’s mom after noticing his odd behavior. His mom said it was out of character for him to be unreachable. Once they finally found Badillo, he said that he was spending time with his former partner’s child.

Vanessa Ray, who played Eddie, spoke about what it was like to see Jamie take the fall.

“It’s always a surprise when Jamie does something that is sort of out of character,” she told TV Insider in November 2024. “So I think that maybe that was sort of my reading of it was like, ‘Oh, wait a second. What? What are you doing? What’s happening? What are we doing?’”

She also explained why the partnership between Eddie and Badillo worked so well over the seasons.

“So much of it has to do with Ian. He’s just such a delight and he’s such a giving person in general that what he brings to the character is just such a — it’s really funny in real life, like I said, Ian is so giving and caring and kind, but I mean, let’s not get it twisted,” Vanessa said. “The guy is cool. The guy is cool on camera. He’s got swagger. His character is totally willing to push back against Eddie, and Eddie’s usually the person that gets to do the pushing back. And so here he is just being cool and pushing her buttons and all of those things. And I think that’s what makes it work so well is she gets a little bit of a taste of her own medicine with him.”

Ahead of the final episode of the show, Ian shared a post on Instagram reflecting on being a part of the series.

“Still can’t believe tonight is the final episode of @bluebloods_cbs . One of the things everyone loves so much is the family dinner. Let me tell you that sense of family extends FAR beyond that table,” he wrote alongside a montage of clips from behind the scenes.

“From my first day, everyone on the cast and crew welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like a part of the team,” he added. “I’m beyond thankful for all these wonderful people and will cherish the art and memories we created. Keep shining! And thank you to all the fans who have watched for 14 seasons! We could not have done this without you #bluebloods.”

What Happened to Luis Badillo?

Just when it seemed like viewers were getting to know more about Badillo and he was on his way to a redemption arc, tragedy struck. In the show’s series finale, which aired in December 2024, Eddie and Badillo received a call for a possible carjacking. However, when they arrived at the scene, there was nobody in the vehicle.

They were ambushed by a gangster, who opened fire on the both of them. Badillo was struck by a bullet in the chest and fell to the ground. Eddie, who was grazed by a bullet, went over to comfort him as she called in backup. Later on in the hospital, Eddie learned that Badillo had died. She was left distraught by the news.

His killer was arrested at the hospital after a manhunt by the NYPD, led by Jamie and Joe Hill. Badillo was laid to rest in a funeral attended by the Reagans, Mayor Peter Chase, Badillo’s mom and the rest of the NYPD.

Why Was Luis Badillo Killed Off of ‘Blue Bloods’?

After the finale aired, showrunner Kevin Wade explained why Badillo was killed off instead of one of the Reagans.

“Let’s work backward. We didn’t see any value for the audience or the legacy of the show in killing off one of the Reagans,” he said to TV Insider when asked about the decision in December 2024. “It wasn’t that kind of show. I don’t think people were going to go, ‘Thank God, Henry had a heart attack.’ Or ‘Good, Danny would get shot and killed.'”

“But we did have to sacrifice somebody, It affected Eddie very strongly, so that was important,” Wade added. “So when it was decided, I got with Ian and Vanessa, and said, ‘Look guys, Badillo is going to die, but there will be great scenes for both Eddie and Badillo.’ I wanted to get ahead of it, and then in sharing it with him, I said, ‘It’s good news: Your character dies and you’ll get all this attention.’”

Further, in an interview with TVLine, Wade said killing off a Reagan wouldn’t make sense with the story.

“I thought the audience would have hated it, to be honest with you,” he shared. “It’s Friday night-at-10 o’clock entertainment” and “I don’t think [viewers] wanted a dead Henry or a dead Frank.”

He said that with everything the family had been through, “every victory had to come with a personal loss or defeat.”

“So for all of them to have to attend the funeral of Eddie’s partner gave us that dimension,” Wade concluded.
