Blue Bloods fans did everything they possibly could to try and save the show, but in the end, was the series renewed for 2025?

Was ‘Blue Bloods’ Renewed?

Blue Bloods was not renewed in 2025, therefore, there will not be a season 15 of the show. Instead, the show’s cast said goodbye to their characters in a series finale, which aired in December 2024.

Star Tom Selleck admitted he wasn’t sure why CBS pulled the plug on the long running crime drama in which he portrayed Frank Reagan for 14 seasons.

“My biggest goal is to make sure people realize we went out in rather spectacular success,” he told Entertainment Weekly in December 2024. “It wasn’t tired, it wasn’t anything else. Somebody may be able to tell me someday why CBS wanted to end it, but I haven’t had a good answer yet.”

Fans tried to stop the cancellation of the show, using #SaveBlueBloods on social media and voicing their frustrations with the network.

What Happened in the ‘Blue Bloods’ Series Finale?

The Blue Bloods series finale was quite dramatic, as Mayor Peter Chase was shot by a gang member while unveiling a NYC landmark. Officer Luis Badillo was also shot and killed by a gang member during the episode while responding to a call about a carjacking.

The Reagan’s all pitched in to take down the gang and, in the end, succeeded. They laid Badillo to rest in a funeral attended by the NYPD. At the final family dinner, Erin Reagan sat with Jack Boyle, whom she reconciled with during the episode. Eddie Janko-Reagan announced she was pregnant with her first child with husband Jamie Reagan. Frank ended the episode off with a prayer.

“Life Sentence” – The Reagans’ professional lives converge when an allegation of jury tampering against Erin intertwines with Danny and Baez’s homicide case and Eddie’s bond to a child murder witness; Frank clashes with his friend and confidant Archbishop Kearns over the death penalty; and when Jamie’s car is stolen, he joins forces with his nephew, Joe Hill, to recover it. Stacy Keach, Peter Hermann and Will Hochman guest star on the 14th season, part two premiere of BLUE BLOODS, Friday, Oct. 18 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the episode airs)*. Showrunner Kevin Wade explained why he decided to kill off Badillo instead of a beloved member of the Reagan family.

“I thought the audience would have hated it, to be honest with you,” he told Deadline in December 2024. “It’s a Friday night at 10 o’clock entertainment, and the people who watch it out between New York and Los Angeles, which is most of the audience, I don’t think they wanted a dead Henry or a dead Frank.”

The ‘Blue Bloods’ Universe Is Expanding

While Blue Bloods’ initial 14-season run has come to an end, CBS announced a series expansion with a new show called Boston Blue. The series will star Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan, after he takes a job with the Boston PD.

Danny will have a new partner beside him, as “he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”

No further casting announcements have been made as of publication. However, an insider told Closer that Tom was interested in reprising his role of Frank.

“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” an insider told Closer in February 2025. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”

Boston Blue will be hitting the CBS lineup in the fall of 2025.
